Seems like it was a common thing when the Wii released to have house parties just to play it. My aunt did something similar when the Atari released. I'm told no one was all that impressed and she was asked things like "How much did you spend on this?" Video games were considered too expensive for anyone else in my family to be interested until the NES came out and it was still more a novelty to be used in large groups. Even single player games like Legend of Zelda was a group activity that had multiple people trying to figure out where to go or what to hit. That group involvement is probably why I never saw or understood console wars as a kid. There wasn't much of a possessive element over video games, it was more like sports where you or someone else would ask to join in or play.
