Can you guys school me on the DQ series? Obviously the titles that count as retro.

What's the best starting point? How would you rank the series? Which titles are considered to the best, in the way that FF7 is always heralded as the peak of the Final Fantasy series?

Basically interested in learning as much peripheral stuff as I possibly can before I jump in.
