Okay, the balancing is fucked. It's complex Doom levels of bad. But, if you put the highest difficulty on, you get a ''muh tacticool'' type feeling, where everything is deadly so you have to be careful and methodical. If you put on the lower difficulties it's a total power fantasy and you get to blow shit up while having full health constantly.

It's really subjective honestly, if you like feeling overloaded with shit in your face and plenty of stuff to DAKKA away at, it's good.

If you don't like the feeling of barfing up bullets at horrific reskins of doom enemies it probably won't be your cup of tea. Make up your own mind.

The thing is, its really not a vast minority. If you look at the incredible success of games like Cuphead and Dark Souls/ Bloodborne, you can see that there is still a huge community of gamers who like a challenge. Look at games like Yooka-Laylee and Mighty Number 9, which may have been crap on release, but still had massive, unprecedented success in their kickstarter phase due to people wanting these kinds of old school games to come back. Your average gamer is not this hypercasual 7 year old that the industry seems to think it is.

Still, the average shooter that comes out these days is casual as hell, and you can tell that bethesda was terrified to deviate from that template by too far, lest they alienate the COD and Halo babbies. So we got a proper shooter with no health regen and no 2 weapon cap, but the tradeoff was they put health and superpowerups EVERYWHERE. Welp, at least we got....halfway there?

I have only recently actually sat down and decided to play through Final Doom proper. I had only ever really played through Doom and Doom II countless times over the years. As well as some other random wads people have made.

Holy shit why did I never try these before, they're so gloriously hard and you keep coming back for more. Its difficulty is paced well and I have yet to blame poor map design for any of my deaths, which is something a lot of other wads have problems with. There are none of those, "come on, how is anyone supposed to do this," moments for me, at least not yet.

I will say though, fucking chaingunners sniping you from across the map, everytime man.
