crash site (300min)

i automatically love this for being a "to hell and back" map, like some of the most classic of classics (UAC_DEAD is probably the most well known). arrival at moonbase finds no signs of human life, with no escape because demons have taken macguffin back to their dimension. so climax is to go into Hell Itself. here you have crash-landed, your ship and crew in pieces around you. a story without words.

the moonbase is quite good. maybe a few too many small rooms and doors, but there are some windows and non-square room to prevent wolfmap syndrome. also many nice views of the planet outside, with the obligatory accessible outyard where you find some useful item, love it. tension builds as you journey down to the departure gate where heavier resistance is met (sadly this is a bit susceptible to door camping). then you arm yourself heavily and cross over.

the other side of the hell portal is suitably weird and a completely different gameplay style, where instead of rooms+halls we have a spacious cavern in all shades of glowing rocks where you are chased around by various deadly beasts while looking for the final key. i died here, managing to get myself stuck between an exploding pain elemental and three other monsters all at once, in an open cavern floor. impressive. one restart later... on return, the base has been repopulated, and you must fight your way to the exit, behind which freedom awaits. well almost, it's a pretty obvious ambush. also no way off the planet sadly, just a lift to wherever next.

there are some small bugs. thing 277 is deaf and never teleports. the secret area is split into three; sectors 440 and 441 should not be secret. this is especially confusing as there are many map-visible two-sided lines that look like they could be openable doors, but aren't; i thus spent a long time looking for other secret triggers that didn't exist.
