For much of the time period covered by /vr/, arcade games had hardware which was unavailable in home consoles. Many home ports of arcade games were cut-down significantly, featuring less animation, fewer special effects, reduced color palettes, lower screen resolution, etc. Getting the coin-op hardware yourself was hundreds to thousands of dollars per game, and required custom (or special-order) equipment to run. A good gaming variety back then involved both home machines and coin-op machines.
