R4 cheats and counts upgraded cars as separate cars even though they look the same. At least in Rage Racer and Ridge Racer V upgraded cars had different bodywork.
And even if we remove all literal duplicate cars from the game, there are still many cars that look like each other, even from different manucatrurers (pic related).
