Once we got the beta Hyrule Field from the overdump, people realized the entrance walls to Castle Town were always visible from what we thought was Lost Woods, as well as the map's code calling for a lot of objects that're most likely the trees. The purple fog was probably then a result of the devkit struggling with all the tree objects.

I believe they were trying to measure how big they could get before it either looked like shit due to fog excess or the console lagged well below the target 20FPS. After than, then just scale back and down. I'm more surprised they bothered redoing the grass and ground textures.

I think it has to do with how the game is programmed, the team knew from the getgo when the project moved to cartridge what sort of framerate they were going to be locked in if they truly felt like also improving on Mario 64's graphics. The old Hyrule field and massive areas, after been identified in old screenshots (for example, what we thought was beta lost woods was in reality tree sprites in hyrule field with a fuckton of mist to hide it all) must've made the game run like shit and therefore the game design was tweaked to "we have to make this run at 20 STABLE fps".

Yup. And this was Hyrule Field just outside of the market, not the Lost Woods, meaning Poes wandering around the field was one of the oldest ideas they had for the game that stuck until the end.

If you really want gigaleak specific shit, Majora's Mask was built off of Ura Zelda despite Miyamoto saying for years it wasn't, and pic related was an incredibly early Hyrule Field with the Market in the foggy distance. Poes in Hyrule Field was literally one of the first ideas implemented and it persisted to the final game.

If you mean the older Lost Woods map found, we don't know yet. We only know DrDisco and Zen64 were working on it.
If you mean what we thought was Lost Woods for 2 decades, it turns out it was Hyrule Field. If you play the map on Dr. Disco's patched ROM you can see it had a shit-tastic Draw Distance and the pink fog was most likely to hide it.
I dread to know how bad the game ran with all those tree actors and objects loaded.

The Poe stuff was repurposed into Dampe's race. According to that description and others, you'd race the Pie through the map now known as Dampe's grave until you reached an arena (whilst in the final version it'd end in a room with the Hookshot) but the rest of the "race" map wasn't changed when it became Dampe's grave.

Pic related is Hyrule Field, Poes apparently were always meant to appear in the Field as well.
