In small handhelds it's a lost cause. I don't use them save for 8 way movement in a jrpg like Wild Arms or Final Fantasy VII

The way I see it, unless the handheld is "big" and has decent grips, the one at the bottom will always be uncomfortable. Same as how using the d-pad on a non-XL 3DS sucks, or how I had to get a third party controller with the d-pad at the top for for certain Xbox games.
