The crescent and star were adopted by Islam and are now primarily associated with it, but the symbol predates the founding of that religion by at least several millennia. As with many things like various myths it was something the new religions used and recontextualized for their own purposes.

In someways an unfair analogy, but it's similar to the Nazis adopting the swastika (inverting it) and then using it as their symbol.
