Why do people think "anime" only refers to modern anime? Most japanese shmups had "anime" style. You can think of all the 80s and 90s ones as OVA-style anime, or stuff like Macross.

No, I didn't play them, although I remember being hyped for the cancelled Robotech N64 game back in the day. I think a ROM finally leaked but I never checked it out yet.
For Macross though, Scrambled Valkyrie is great.

I dunno if "absolutely destroys", but it was more suited for the genre, yes.
Still, SNES has a lot of great shmups, that's hard to deny.

Also PSX has amazing mecha games. Armored Core, Gundam Battle Assault

Stop fighting guys, why don't we just accept that both SNES and Mega Drive had good shooters, independently from the on-spec papers and marketing campaigns of each system?

MD has a lot of great shmups, but so does the SNES.
Thunder Force III is better than IV, I agree on that.
