Wasn't my game so I honestly don't know what version it was. I never paid attention to that sort of thing as a kid, it was just something I accepted like when my copy of Ocarina of Time didn't have the same Fire Temple chanting as my cousins. My first thought definitely wasn't "Oh, this must be a different build or later print of the game."

I could argue this exact point too, most of the momentum and movement based bugs and glitches with Mario 64 (such as BLJ) were fixed in the Japanese "Shindou" version. However that doesn't matter or apply to me, similarly any European or WW release of Sonic Adventure also doesn't matter to me. It's unrelated deflection and semantics at this point.

>In Sonic 2, the ram doesn't erase when you reset the console. If you reset the game and continue via the sound test screen you will keep all of your emeralds. This is a useful trick to help you get the good ending.
Isn't that cheating though?

I'll make sure to make a post about how the D-Pad feels once I get it, I ended up buying it because the RetroBits are way harder to find, and more expensive, where I live. I hope it turns out fine, I also went with the Bluetooth in this occassion due to it being on sale in many stores, si cheaper than the 2,4ghz, so my choice ended up being made for me in a way, if it ends up not being so good in the end, then at least it was quite cheap to afford here.

Well, thanks for everyone who replied and helped me out here, will make sure to update everyone when it arrives.

Imagine if Sonic 3D Blast had a planned Saturn release from the start, and we got that superb level design just the same... but it looked like this.

I mean, that's my dream right there.

I'm more of a SEGA fan than a Nintendo fan, and overall find the Dreamcast to be pure SOUL... but my some of my favorites in the console, mainly Sonic, are all on Game Cube, which also has Sonic conpilations and Sonic Heroes, not only that, but in general Game Cube had a richer library, so I'll go with it, even though it's a tough decision to make.

It really is, world 8 doesn't seem to have a single mushroom aswell, or at least I can't find one.

>>10208048
I know that World is a huge improvement over the original, but it's not the one I grew up with, the original is the only Mario installment I'm truly somewhat attached to and have nostalgia for, it's the one I want to finish at least once.

>>10208058
I agree, but that's tough sometimes... I've never finished a single Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania, Pokémon, etc... I grew up mostly with SEGA and Sony, spent little time with my FamiClone (NES) and I have this problem that I have difficulty playing anything new, I mostly kust stick to franchises I grew up with, anything new I usually lose interest and never finish, but it feels bad, you know? So many must plays that I never bothered truly playing, and yet I post on a retro vídeo games board, I feel a bit silly. I'm going for warps and the continue code now, but still can't do it, world 8 is just that unforgiving.

I wish they had just done a proto-Sonic Adventure similar to the Sonic World section of Sonic Jam instead of SoA and SoJ forgetting that they were two parts of the same company and constantly fighting one another while wasting endless amounts of time and resources on retarded fisheye bullshit.

Shit, segafags would have been happy with a high quality 2.5D Sonic game. The N64 had Mario 64 ready from the get go and Nintenyearolds were creaming their jeans, meanwhile the only Sonic releases we got on the Saturn were a compilation disc, a weird racing game that is technically impressive but borderline impossible to control, and an isometric view turd that was basically just an upscaled Genesis game.

Yes. It's hard to explain to someone who wasn't around at the time, but seeing Mario run in circles and jump around in full 3D made 90s kids piss and shid their pants. 3D games were the future, and mascots sold games. Even terrible franchises like Bubsy did well back then. The closest thing the Saturn had to a mascot was probably Bug, but it wasn't enough.

Sega's silo culture and the retarded ego battles between SoJ and SoA fucked the console out of getting a mainline Sonic game. The console was powerful enough to do a proto-Sonic Adventure, if the two half of the company had just worked together and created a solid Sonic game instead of wasting time with endless bickering and retarded fisheye shit no one wanted maybe they would have been able to restore some of the public confidence that they lost with the 32X.

Instead we got an uprezzed Genesis game, a compilation of Genesis games, and a graphically impressive pseudo-racing game with a great soundtrack and shit gameplay. It wouldn't have been good for the Saturn's reputation in terms of how powerful it was, but I would have settled for a solid 2.5D Sonic game.

some sound effects are off in sonic jam, but outside of that its a fantastic port collection and not just rom dumps.
jam shines with sonic world, a 3d hub world where you can run around and find codes for the genesis games and learn about sonic history/characters, and watch old japanese commercials.
jam also offers an exclusive "normal mode" where they edited the layouts to be less hardcore for new players. like the spike pit in mystic cave has a spring.

there's ninpen manmaru, but i never played it. sonic world from sonic jam if that counts. burning rangers is quite beautiful but it's clearly breaking the saturn at the seams, it's very common seeing the geometry break at the corner of the screen. powerslave (or exhumed as i like to call it) is actually a really good game, and quite beautiful, its colors often reminds me of how tomb raider looks being that the game is in tombs and pyramids and shit like that. it's sort of a pedantic point to make but powerslave does really stratle the line between platformer and FPS, and considering that the actual shooting is very strategic and defensive, you actually find yourself most of the game platforming around and exploring areas, again very similar to tomb raider in spirit

Sonic was in a catch-22 on the Saturn. The hardware wasn't powerful enough to do 3D sonic properly because that requires large levels and a decent framerate. 2D sonic on Saturn would've been amazing, but at the time I can see how this would've been viewed as a laughing stock while everyone else was jumping on the 3D bandwagon and 2D was seen as lame shit for flaghship platformers.

Still though, I would've loved to see 2D sonic on Saturn. Imagine something like Sonic Mania but the game world is split into separate "layers" like background/middle/foreground and sonic can move between different paths on these layers. I think there's even a Mania level that does something like this, imagine that but fully fleshed out

It's not, the Dreamcast version is the best though, to me, the controllers feel a lot different. Also, it's known that the graphics are downgraded from the Dreamcast version, except for the Sonic model.

>>8275891
His gameplay is so boring, I remember that I was trying to get all of the emblems to unlick the GG games, and I could never fish the last fish. The problem was that I missed one of his upgrades... what annoying character.

The main problem with the series is that each character plays different, so you have to create multiple games instead of one.

- A platform/racing game with Sonic and Shadow.
- A TPS with Tails and Robotinik.
- A collecathon platformer with Knuckles and Rouge.
- A fishing game with Big.
- A virtual pet simulator.
- A few racing tracks.

Is it possible to do that? Yes, but you need to create a 4 to 1 game. It's just too big of a project, it's hard enough to get one game right.

> its hard to even explain how SA1+2 are even that much different than 06
It's not but 06 has a lot of padding, much more than adv12, but they are essentially the same game.

>>8276335
Yeah, there's something wrong with it. I have the impression that the DC version plays better though.

Their fall started on the GC era. Nintendo messed too much with Dinosaur Planet, a lot of people that made 007/PD left Rare to found the Free Radical. Kameo was not great. BK N&B wasn't what everybody wanted, and the team could never do Banjo again, we can clearly see that on Yooka-Laylee. Viva Piñata was great though, very smart and creative.

At this point, have the 3D games for PS1, Saturn, N64, etc. become a "you had to be there" thing? It seems like if you didn't grow up with these games, you are much more inclined to dismiss them for being "old" or "looking like shit".

Here's what sega should have done to have kept sonic good all the way through
Sonic 1, 2, cd and 3&k like they are
Instead of chaotix spend the development time on a 2d mainseries game on the saturn, or a 3d game like gif related instead of xtreme
Adventure 1 and 2 like they are
Dx and battle versions more faithful to the originals and also released on ps2 and xbox
Boost style directly after that with no heroes or shadow
