Why would they have made one? The series had declining sales, pretty much every other Nintendo IP sold better. Hell, Symphony of the Night still sold less than Super Metroid, had 1.27 million total copies sold worldwide. That's not exactly a pie that Nintendo was itching to get a piece of. I know history makes this out to be a critically acclaimed genre and what a no-brainer it would be to make a Metroidvania game but back then, these weren't hits that demanded new releases, Nintendo wasn't stupid not to release a poorly selling Metroid game.
