I second the recommendations of FF3/6 and Chrono Trigger. Final Fantasy if you want something longer and more complex, Chrono Trigger if you want something shorter and more straightforward (but hardly lacking in gameplay and story). They're two of my favorites on the SNES.

Neither of them need fan retranslations, but they're Woosley translations, so they generally read well (and have some memorable lines) but aren't always accurate. I don't know anything about fan translations, but both games got updated ports with new and more accurate translations if you want those. They're on the DS (for Chrono Trigger) and GBA (for FF6).

I'm blanking on many other RPGs to recommend at the moment, but the first three Mario RPGs (Super Mario RPG on NES, Paper Mario on N64, and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door on Gamecube) are all good. They're shorter and much easier than Breath of Fire 2, outside of a few tough spots, with more focus on exploring for secrets and light platforming/puzzle elements.

Just don't expect any waifus on the same level as Katt from any of those.
