Most publications of the time (God, I still remember those days) called that area a lake. It does seem to more or less match the general shape of Lake Hylia and those 2 pillars look like the pillars where the Warp Spot from Zora's Domain to Lake Hylia is in.

The design of this castle-like room brings to mind the interior of Peach's Castle in Super Mario 64. It may reflect Miyamoto's original concept for Ocarina of Time.
