I've never heard bad things about Mega Man Legends. Castlevania is different, but not sure I'd call it bad. I too prefer SNES and Genesis but N64 isn't terrible. Born in 1991, owned both consoles and Genesis growing up.

If Nintendo treated the N64 like SEGA treated the Saturn, there would be no Mario game until 1999, we would maybe just have Yoshi's Story, Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat games, a straight port of Super Mario All-Stars + World, and maybe Mario Kart and a few other racing titles. The real question is whether we would have Banjo and DK64 or not, since those didn't come out until later anyway. It would make fifth gen even if this happened imo, and both consoles had issues to begin with.

On the flip side, if it was still released on the N64 in 1999, it may have meant bigger worlds, nicer lighting effects, and better textures + character models, maybe a bit closer to something like Super Mario 64 DS.

Ape Escape
Crazy Climber
DDR (all of them)
DK King of Swing/Jungle Climber
Donkey Konga
DK Jungle Beat
Samba De Amigo
Smash TV (sort of)
Stepmania

Iirc Mischief Makers also uses the d-pad specifically which is unusual for N64 games

Not really weird or unusual, but I got both a GameShark for N64 and an Action Replay for GameCube. Had tons of fun playing as Krusha in DK64, Metal Mario and Master Hand in Smash Bros, getting the Ice Key in Banjo, etc. I also own an og Wavebird controller which rocked for playing games on the big screen

I mean there's other FPS games on it like Duke Nukem 3D if you like GoldenEye and Perfect Dark. I don't really know what to compared Excitebike to since I haven't played it but I did really enjoy Wave Race 64 and F-Zero X.

>Top Ten
Banjo-Kazooie
Banjo-Tooie
Donkey Kong 64
F-Zero X
Super Smash Bros.
Mario Party
Gex 64
Glover
Wave Race 64
California Speed

>Hidden Gems
Mischief Makers
Rakuga Kids
Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth
Taisen Puzzle-dama
Sin and Punishment
Bangai-O

Other notable games include but not limited to Animal Forest, Star Fox 64, Pokemon Snap, Kirby 64, Rayman 2, Mickey Speedway USA.

It's not my favorite console by a long shot but there's still some great stuff on there. It was fun to grow up with. If you absolutely hate it just stick with SNES/Super Famicom, most people don't know this but they still released SNES games long after the N64 (Donkey Kong Country 3, Kirby's Dream Land 3, and Rockman and Forte are the most notable examples, but there's way more like Bahamut Lagoon and Fire Emblem). There's also Game Boy and Game Boy Color which continued to get games during that time, as one anon pointed out Pokemon on og Game Boy didn't release until 1998 in North America

Came here to say this basically. I grew up with it, it's still a fun game but between not being an actual DKC game and being both bigger and more repetitive than Banjo-Kazooie it didn't really get as much recognition as either for that reason. I do agree that it had very nice atmosphere and ambiance though, just as much if not more than the original DKC series. I also agree that it feels much more "alive" and all around better than later games in the genre, particularly the few attempts during sixth gen

Had most of these games growing up with the exception of the last two. Honorable mention goes to Animal Forest which would be great because it's always changing and F-Zero X which is probably a better choice than California Speed. Sadly I might prefer being assassinated, but it has less to do with the N64 and more to do with my personal "life". Anyway nice thread OP, good to see an actual N64 thread for once

SoA were not the only ones interested in 3D games. Nintendo basically abandoned all 2D games after the SNES as well and repeated many of the same mistakes the Saturn made. Both consoles were pale comparisons to their predecessors imho. Fifth gen was just a very volatile time for hardware developers. Nobody knew what was coming next after 16-bit. 32-bit, 64-bit, 2D, 3D, it was all up in the air. Honestly I think people put way too much of the blame on SoA when there were so many other factors during that time period.

It was a little more powerful on the 3D end especially with the expansion pack. Full-motion video and CDDA audio are where it suffered, along with lack of 2D games

Stupid arbitrary Klungo boss fight and excessive cutscenes are mostly to blame, iirc you have to go to Jingaling's lair and Bottles' house or whatever too, but it's fun once you get past the introductory sstuff

My thoughts exactly

>>10425050
Influence doesn't necessarily make a game good, but it does make a game important. Night Trap is a game most people probably wouldn't bother with, but its cultural influence and the fact that it's basically partially responsible for the ESRB being formed makes it an important game. The same can be said of games like Angry Birds and their impact on mobile gaming. It's not really about being great.

Super Mario 64 may not be the *best* 3D platformer, but it is still an important game for basically starting the genre alongside Crash Bandicoot. You don't have to like it, but it's still an important game.

Download Mupen64Plus with the Champion N64 romset. Should be like five gigs. Way better than paying $30 for a Banjo game

There's a lot more but people very rarely talk about them. Off the top of my head you've got
Bangai-O
Dezaemon 3D (JP only)
Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth
Bomberman Hero
Rakuga Kids
Animal Forest (English patched)
Puyo Puyo Sun 64
Susume! Taisen Puzzle Dama

I prefer PS1 and Saturn over N64 but they are not more powerful when it comes to 3D graphics. Better at audio and FMV stuff yes, but the N64 was a powerhouse when it comes to 3D technology. Saturn could never handle something like OoT. As wonky as it is, the N64 was still capable of some really impressive visuals that SEGA would not see until the Dreamcast

Personally I would say just buy a USB or bluetooth N64 controller instead and just emulate it. Like every cartridge console the files are extremely small, so you can download the entire English-friendly romset in the span of a few minutes, if even that. Once you've made it past the Mario and Banjo/Rare games and I guess Smash Bros, there's not really much else. Some people really like the Zelda games but I personally never got into them. Has some good racing games as well, mostly either first-party or by Midway.

I'm of the mindset that 3D platformers never really went anywhere. Mario and Sonic got games consistently throughout, the PS2 had three exclusive platformer trilogies (four if you count Ape Escape), Xbox got both Conker and Blinx, and we got a handful of other series during that time period like Pac-Man World 2 and 3, Tak, Ty, Vexx, and Scaler. Uncharted basically replaced Jak during Gen 7, but we still had plenty of Mario and Sonic games, as well as stuff like Epic Mickey and Pac-Man's reboot game.

I wouldn't even call it cult status really. Mario just got a movie and both Zelda games on Switch were super popular. Even if Sony brought back Ape Escape or something on the other hand there's no guarantee it would sell very well, not like Mario and Zelda. Nintendo just established these flagship IP's as staples very early on and never broke away from it, Sony replaces them every gen and as a result the N64 is (maybe?) more fondly remembered nowadays.

There's also the huge impact four player multiplayer made. Nobody could forget those late nights staying up and playing Mario Party, Mario Kart, or Smash Bros. I mean I guess PS1 had Madden, but that wasn't an exclusive or anything.

>>10329152
It is a two-fold, maybe three-fold problem. Nintendo makes underpowered hardware and repels third-party developers, Nintendo fans only play first-party Nintendo games, Sony and MS make great hardware with great third-party games while making mediocre first-party games, Nintendo fans see this and ignore it because they are only looking at first-party stuff, the next gen is introduced, rinse and repeat.

If I can put myself in tendie mode for a second, it's probably confusing for them when they look at Sony or SEGA as a brand, because of how Nintendo handles things. Sony doesn't really make games, most of the good stuff on PS1 and other platforms was made by third-parties like Capcom, Namco, and Konami. SEGA has a lot of IP's, but the only one that's been consistently active is Sonic, and unlike Nintendo they don't have three or four other colorful platformer series outside of maybe Monkey Ball and a bunch of older titles that only got like one or two entries (Ristar, Vectorman, Clockwork Knight, Astal etc).

This was the beginning of Nintendo's slippery slope with third party support which only got worse with the Wii and eventually the Wii U. Almost any 2D game also got dumped onto GBC without much thought, though there are a few notable ones like Mischief Makers and Rakuga Kids. Without Midway and Rare though there wouldn't be much to look at

Also, the controller kind of speaks for itself. It's kind of comfy I guess, but still

The N64 game came out around the same time as Pokemon Crystal which was made use of the internal clock on the GBC, so they probably wanted to do something similar on the N64 but bigger, which later became the GCN game we got. Also Harvest Moon predates The Sims by about four years

I remember about a decade ago when I was going through the N64 library looking for good third-party exclusives (aside from Mischief Makers) and I discovered this game. It's surprisingly good, up there with the Midway racers. Maybe even better
