Those monitors are legit good when they work.
That said they aren't really that much better than other makes of RGB monitors (both for pro monitors and consumer computer monitors for the Amiga and such) which use tri-dot shadow masks. I even prefer the shadow masks frequently.

Panasonic BT-H1390YN, Sega Genesis model 1 VA6.8 with holes drilled in back for RGB via RCA jacks. RCA -> BNC adapters on the back of the monitor.
Buffered CSync with a 74LS08 chip (genesis sync signal is open collector, so you need to buffer it or you'll just put load on the VDP and get a black screen).
Strictly speaking you don't need to buffer sync (on THIS monitor) if you turn off termination on the sync line with a switch on the back of the monitor. This doesn't work on any of my PVMs though, so I have the buffer since that works anywhere I've tried.
