Most anything by Capcom, really. These games were made to be unforgiving for the sake of credit feeding.

But to veer away from Capcom for a moment, I'll also say Fantasy Zone. I think only two of them were ever released in the arcades, but I may be wrong.

And Trojan as well, which I'm pretty sure is based on GnG hardware. It's practically just a ROM hack of the game.

Let's talk about post-apocalyptic settings. What are some cool /vr/ games with gritty aesthetics?

Pic related is Trojan, an arcade platformer by Capcom that's vaguely similar to Ghosts 'n Goblins. There were also DOS and NES ports.

>am I just bad at games now or is genesis ghouls and ghosts a lot harder than I remember?

GnG is a rote memorization series similar to Contra, although the precision and timing are quite a bit more autistic than anything Contra has ever thrown our way.

Also check out Trojan by the same developer. It plays a lot like GnG.

I'll throw something less common out there. But challenging retro games weren't exactly an uncommon phenomenon.

>So now that's it's pretty much certain the U.S. is going to nuke Afghanistan and Syria over the recent terrorist attack...

Uh, that's a little more than farfetched, OP.

Although I would have liked to see more post-nuclear war themes in retro games. A couple of overlooked titles I can think of are Trojan and 8 Eye's. You probably wouldn't even know that 8 Eye's took place after a nuclear holocaust unless you read the manual. Internally, the game looks more like a CV clone.

It doesn't get more essential than Ghosts 'n Goblins. The stages and enemy placement are designed specifically to troll players.

ActRaiser 2 isn't mentioned very often, but it's right on par with GnG.

Trojan is another lesser known platformer. Also by Capcom.

I was recently playing ActRaiser 2 and Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, and it got me to thinking: What are some of the most obscenely difficult retro platformers out there?

I suppose action-adventure games and RPGs with platforming elements also count - games like Zelda II and some of the Castlevania titles.
