Definitely still your best setup. It reminds me of so many friends' bedrooms from my youth and how I would just bike over after school, hang out as late as possible, call my mom to let her know where I was, stay for dinner, play a whole bunch more, and then ride back home in the glow of the streetlights.

>The benefits of HD resolutions are obvious IMO
I seriously can't say this with a straight face anymore. I've always been a stickler for image quality, but last weekend I was watching 1080p rips of Studio Ghibli movies on my CRT through an HDMI to S-video conversion in 480i, and as much as I've been desensitized to impressive video quality, I did a double-take. I watch those movies all the time on my LCD, and there were only marginal imperfections on the CRT, mostly due to the monitor being 22 years old. I was still seeing every detail in the cels and backgrounds. The few flaws the image did have (mostly ghosting) were entirely compensated for by the improved color richness and depth that comes with using a CRT.

I try not to be the kind of retro hipster that just unilaterally declares CRTs the best for everything, but I was legit impressed that my beat-up little workhorse PVM was giving me an image so crisp while still being interlaced.

BVMs largely rose to their exalted status because of youtubers who jerk off to scanlines, and dipshits who bought into the meme with more money than sense. BVMs are superior in terms of clarity and the array of control/settings/tweaks you have at your fingertips, but that's really more for seriously high-end video requirements. Those are the kinds of monitors that Hollywood used for editing and color-correcting. Specifically seeking one out to get a better 240p image out of a Super Nintendo is like using a Maserati to take the kids to get fro-yo. A PVM is more than enough. In fact, many people say that the scanlines on BVMs are so pronounced (since they were never really intended to be used for video games or 240p signals) that it becomes distracting. If you were going to get it for a couple hundred or less, then sure, but $1000 would only be "reasonable" if this were 15 years ago and you were trying to edit a Hollywood blockbuster.
