Speaking from experience.

I partially agree with both of these. Knowing Japanese certainly has it's perks. However, know this. Learning Japanese is a huge bitch, as I'm sure you've heard, but it's such a huge bitch that it can't be underestimated. Either it's going to take you a long time, or it's going to take you a couple of months if you no-life it (do nothing but teach yourself Japanese, and I mean nothing) and those months will be extremely agonizing. Also, if you emulate , I'm sure there's English patches of some of those games out.

My advice is to just emulate and use translations. Otaku media has very active translator fanbase, and it's become even more active as of late. It might not be worth it. But, if you do learn Japanese, you'll be in the know for all things otaku, and obviously you won't have to wait for any butchered translations.

I recommend http://www.yosida.com/en/learning.html for hiragana and katakana, and http://kanjidamage.com/ for kanji, obviously. Use your own method, use what works.
