2.5D refers to a couple of very deliberate art styles. They could have used 3D characters instead of sprites if they wanted to.

Final Fantasy Tactics can lead you to potentially softlocking. Some locations in the game have more than one fight that you have to do back-to-back. You can't leave in the middle of these fights, but you can save so if you can't win the following fight but don't have a backup save, then you're gonna have to restart from the beginning.
The most infamous of these is the Wiegraf fight late in the game, because you can only use Ramza for it.

32X handle 3D environments
Genesis handles character sprites
Maybe use the CD for some spell animations

The 32X was a dumb idea, the timing was horrible, the price ridiculous. It should have been a dedicated 2D expansion that would have gotten the games on par with neo geo, or even better. And it should have come out shortly after the neo geo.

Yet with that said, i think we've never seen its real potential. I think if skilled programmers juggled the 32X and genesis hardware, we should be able to get some 2.5D games like Klonoa, Grandia, Breath of Fire 3, FF Tactics, etc...

The 3D environments might have to use garoud shading, or sonic style big checkered patterns, but honestly that would probably age better than low res textures.
