>I'm leaning towards Megaton Edition.

The only advantage of Megaton is that it has all 3 add-ons easily playable. Otherwise, World Tour is a better port in every single way.

>Redneck Rampage

It's true that the original is very hit&miss, however the problem is that most people stopped there while the add-on Route 66, does a good job at hiding the flaws of the original, while Rides Again, the sequel, fixes a lot of them and adds tons of cool shit and has some amazing level design.

Most people don't even know Rides Again is a sequel so that's how misundertood/underplayed those are.

Redneck Rampage Rides Again (the sequel to Redneck Rampage)
It fixes many issues from the first game, adds a lot, and has MUCH better level design.
The first level is probably the worst though, so stick with it.

This.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Exhumed on PC isn't even the same game. But it's also worth playing, for different reasons than the console version.

No it doesn't. For one thing PowerslaveEX is a recreation of the PS1 version, which itself was a port of the Saturn version.
The PS1 and Saturn version are different in the way they play, and about a total of 4 stages are different or exclusive to each version. That's just the top of the iceberd.

If you ask me the Saturn version is the best, for instance it's the only version in which you can bomb jump (like rocket jumping but with the hand bomb). The PS1 version worth playing too. There is no reason to play a recretion like EX.

Yeah... my thoughts exactly. Sure it has first person shooter element, but it's more like a hybrid action-adventure game overall, with survival horror and FPS elements, and a huge focus on story with its FMV cutscenes.
It was a rather innovative game with big goals, and calling Doom-like is a little reducing.

This being said I recommend Powerslave/Exhumed (PC DOS version) and Redneck Rampage Rides Again in Arkansas, the sequel to the first Redneck Rampage, which imo are two of the most underrated Doom-era FPS.

Just buy the gog version. Then, take a few minutes to try the different video mode of dosbox coupled with the different resolutions of the game to see which works the best and you're set. Optionally get bmouse, too.

If you're having a blast with the original and the addon, Rides Again will blow you away.

Enemies/weapons/overall gameplay isn't as tight as in Duke3D/Blood/ShadowWarrior; but goddamn, Xatrix knew how to make great use of the Build engine. They made really smart use of Sector Over Sector in their levels, as well as using techniques only them used such mixing the shading system of the engine with shading directly applied on the textures; and also doing some really smart combinaison of sector and sprite structures.

Actually commercially speaking it meant everybody could just play the game; you didn't need to have a high end computer for it (but if you did, it supported 3DFX cards, too).

It was also released after Quake, which was full 3D with 3D models. If you ask me Quake stole the show, I find Quake to be a terribly un-fun games, the enemies especially are incredibly unfun and the traps in the levels were frustrating. Quake was good for its level design though, but imo it was nowhere near as good of a game as Powerslave or Redneck Rampage Rides Again (the 2nd Redneck Rampage); yet it stole the show from those because Quake was "technically superior".
The sad truth of PC gaming where technical advancements matter more than gameplay and fun.

Pic related, the fantastic Redneck Rampage Rides Again. I recommend it to anyone who likes games with the build engine and to anyone who likes retro FPS, too. It's really overlooked. It suffered from the reputation of the first RR which was a cool, but flawed game; yet they fixed most of the flaws of the first one while adding even more Cool.

On my old dualcore 2,5ghz I was only able to play Blood in dosbox at 320*200 to have good framerate indeed.

On my new quadcore 3,2ghz, I can play at 800*600 and have a constant 60fps.

However, I don't think the number of cores matter, I don't think dosbox supports more than one core. So basically, it's going from 2,5ghz to 3,2ghz which make the difference.

I can't promise you you'll be able to run it at 800*600 with that setup, but at least 640*400 or 640*480 should be fine.

If you like Blood I recommend you to try Powerslave and Redneck Rampage Rides Again, too.

I agree, and as a mapper for duke3D on my spare time it is my dream to make a 2.5D FPS professionally; sadly I do not have much idea as what theme/character/settings the game could be. I'm trying to find some...

But, would such a FPS made nowadays would be really welcome when people make their own mods for free for such games...?

Anyway I started to play Redneck Rampage Rides Again in Arkansas (the sequel) and it is really solid. They seemed to have improved enemies art and ai and the bike level was really cool.
