I agree with this anon, except I actually prefer the N64 version due to the controls alone. In fact Bangai-O was made with the N64 controller in mind, moving with the d-pad while shooting in all directions with the stick feels awesome (although a bit weird at first). It's the control scheme that's recommended on the game's manual, although using the c-buttons to shoot isn't bad either, similar to using DC's ABXY, but since the c-buttons are smaller it feels more seamless, like a secondary d-pad. Still, shooting with the stick is the way to go.
I think you can play fast in both versions if you're good enough, and upgrading on the 64 version is very quick (using the shop menu is really, really quick, you can do it in a literal second), but unless it's the final boss, I never really felt like upgrading was that important, it does make the game harder though.
As for graphics and music, DC obviously has more, let's say, impressive graphics even if it's still very old school, but I really dig 64's aesthetic, it looks 16-bit and I dig that. Also, some of the backgrounds are actually better-looking on n64 than on DC. DC has more variety of assets in general, though.
For music I also can't decide which I like more, both soundtracks are pretty cool, but I actually find myself going back to listen to 64's tracks more often.
I don't remember new levels on DC, are there really any new levels? I remember 44 levels in both versions. DC does have new bosses or redesigned bosses, though.
Another change I wasn't a big fan of in the DC version was Bangai-O's sprite when he unleashes the missile fury, on N64 you see all these missile pads coming out all around its body, while on DC's sprite the missile pads only come out of its shoulders, a nitpick, I know.

If you already played the DC version, the N64 original is good to go back to because it's harder, and has better controls. Worth playing both versions.

You don't really need to "farm" fruit, since you collect them as you kill enemies, the DC version also limits the amount of missiles you can shoot at a time, since your explosion meter only increases as you kill enemies, on N64 you can always shoot 100.
Also, in most levels you won't really need to upgrade, and using the shop is pretty fast and happens in between the battle, as a reward for doing combos (a feature missing from the DC version).
Overall, I'll give the nod to DC in sound and visuals of course, but personally I like some of the spritework better on the N64 version, for example Bangai-O's explosion pose. I also like some of the backgrounds better on N64, but generally the DC one looks much better and more variated.
Anyway since the DC game is easier, I think it's better to play it first, then the N64 one.
By the way the cool thing about the DS version is that it has a level editor, and it's very easy to download stages (it uses the DS' microphone), the 360 game should have included a level editor. Hell, all of them should have.
Also, another interesting thing about Bangai-O is that the mech was always redesigned for each new installment.
Even the DC and N64 games have different Bangai-O (DC one has "horns" ala Getter Robo)

I mean, you'd miss all the humor and nonsense on the dialogues, but you can still enjoy the game at 100% without being able to read.
The japanese version also has quirkier dialogue boxes. The english version uses the same generic font, but the japanese version has all kind of weird hand-drawn fonts. So even if you're not understanding, it's cool to look at.

The only IPs they own are Bangai-O, Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun, which is why they're the most popular ones, they've been released on Xbox and PC in the case of Ikaruga.
Although the N64 original version of Bangai-O was never re-released, and the Xbox version is called Bangai-O HD, but it was like a whole new game (and the 64 and DC versions were already different enough)
Then the rest is
All the genesis IPs: Sega
Mischief Makers: Square-Enix (I guess?)
Guardian Heroes: Sega.
Sin and Punishment: Nintendo

Spirits is not retro though.
Generally I find backgrounds on the original very comfy, but some of them have a sort of ominous outer space feel that may be a bit eerie.

Those games aren't ugly at all, but yes it's "prerendered" 2D.

I think Bangai-O might be more like the kind of thing you're looking for.
There's also games like Super Robot Wars 64 or Puyo Puyo Sun. I think the N64 could do 2D just fine, but at the time, most people wanted to play 3D stuff.

and while we're mentioning MM, let's also mention the other 2 Treasure gems: Sin and Punishment and Bangai-O.
You will need to import those though.

Alright but posting a score from Gradius is not.

I'm fine if you guys want to wrestle each other like homo neckbeards about who gets the biggest shmup e-penis, but do so on a shmup thread.

Yeah Ikaruga is a Treasure game but there's other Treasure games too, so move on.

Shame Bangai-O was never released outside of Japan for the N64, since the Dreamcast remake, while awesome, has some differences that make the N64 one worth playing too.
