The airbrake system is an excellent mechanic that the entire game is built around. What about the game lacks substance? I'm guessing you only played on the easier speed classes with FEISAR and then wrote it off.

Every track in XL/2097 is a masterpiece, the quality of the track design is consistently higher than 3 (although 3 has my two favorite tracks in the series, Hi-Fumi and Stanza inter) and while pretty rough around the edges the first one has some truly excellent tracks as well (Silverstream, Korodera, Arridos IV). Both also have top notch OSTs with 1's being entirely original and the aesthetics are great.

Stock car racing has advertisers and sponsors, and if putting real word sponsors on billboards on your fictional racetrack gets your game funded, then where's the issue? It doesn't take anyway. And in games like Jet Moto the teams literally being sponsored only made it seem like a legitimate motorsport.
