Probably around 1994-1995, on a PAL NES (it's worth noting that it's rather well optimized for PAL, unlike most NES games).

Fun little story on how I got the game: we already had a NES years before, we had gotten the NES-TMNT bundle which afaik only came out in a few PAL countries. However, one of our pads was broken, and by that time it was impossible to find standalone pads to buy in our area, so my mother went and bought another NES and that one was bundled with SMB3.

However I used flutes to beat the game. i'd usually use flutes and fuck around in whatever world.

it's only in my early 20's that I sat down to play through the entire game in one go and go through every single level.

As for the cards turning mini game that gave power ups, as a kid I used to know every table by heart. IIRC there was only 3 different tables, and I used to know which cards to turn to find out which table it was asap. I was usually loaded with items before the end of the first world.
