This. It's full of interesting ideas executed poorly and it's not balanced in the slightest, but it has a lot of charm and you can still have a ton of fun with it. The base game campaigns are pretty damn good (leagues better than the HoMM3 campaigns imo). The writing in general is suprisingly good, even if that's not exactly why you'd play a HoMM game in the first place.
