Hey now I've always been sucker for a PS1 survival horror thread too. I'm the Anon always hyping up Devil Man. First person ones give me the weirds though.

OP might want to check out some of the early vast, creepy PC games like Ultima Underworld and Daggerfall if he hasn't already. Michigan on PS2 is an interesting take but not retro. On PS1 I could add Hellnight and Deception 1 & 2 to the mix. Hellnight is particularly horrifying with that "hunted" mechanic NESfag loves so much in RE3 I'm surprised he didn't toss that one right out there. Uru! IS better and you can play it without much moon knowledge. Oh Shit! I almost forgot White Day. Check that one out too.
