Since irc is busy playing cards against humanity, what Gameplay Experience Enhancement™ modifications would you recommend to someone who is looking to playthrough Doom and Doom 2 for the first time? I want it to be as native gameplay as possible but I also want it to look better

Sup /vr/, honest question: I keep hearing that there are lots of mods out there that deserve the same amount of praise as Brutal Doom, since they are better from a technical standpoint and whatever, but are heavily underlooked. Can you people tell me which mods are these? So far I've tried Cyberrunner, Accessories to Murder, Samsara, Russian Overkill and Lethal Enforces, am I missing anything else?

I know absolutely nothing of the build engine, so please bear with me here.
I wonder if the build engine can handle minimum and maximum ranges for melee weapons. Different attack speeds, I know it can do. I've seen that in Brutal Doom.

I ask because I've always loved the idea of a doom or hexen-like game which features a semi-complicated melee combat system, revolving around proper control of distance, position and possibly an attack block system.

Since such a game will never come out, I'm wondering if I should take matters into my old hands and brush off my old programming knowledge.
