The only thing I know about FHDB that’s inferior is that some older homebrew don’t work correctly with data files stored on the hard drive, which means that they are less feasible to run without a memory card than some would like. Older builds of uLE won’t be able to find config files stored on HDD, for example. OPL should work just fine on an cardless setup though. I’m not really aware of any other major differences, as both methods abuse the official driver update mechanism in order to function.

Also, without a memory card, play history won’t be updated, but that’s more of an inherent PS2 limitation than anything FHDB can do anything about. Play history is only used at such an early point in the boot process that FHDB couldn’t really redirect it to the HDD.
