The magma slimes were something else until I used one of the rings which casts hide so I got an advantage with that. For Master Ring you can't kill all of the monsters. If you keep one or two alive it won't spam its most powerful attack, and in a SaGa game that is usually about 250~350 damage and max HP is 999, but most people won't even get into the 900's.

Though some of the most fun things is how different races grow since none of the characters are based on experience points and levels, how they learn skills (especially humans and their sparking/glimmering), the fact you can equip more than one weapon, and other options as well that the game(s) give you.

SaGa Frontier is great, has to be my second favorite JRPG, right behind Romancing SaGa.
