Everyone's doing it, so I'll throw in my opinions on ease of "getting into" retro systems.
>Atari 2600
Not always easy to find, but not expensive. Watch out for people selling atari 400/800 computers as often people will just sell them as an "Atari System".
>NES
Good games, but the most common version of the system is often broken in the wild. People say they're easy fixes, but if a simple cleaning doesn't work, it may be more trouble than you bargained for. The alternative is the much more expensive toploader version. Also, many of the more popular games can be expensive.
>Master system
More relable than an NES, but likely had no games you'd recognize (not that it doesn't have good games). With the right peripheral you can play them all o the Genesis.
>Turbografx-16/CD
ABANDON ALL WALLETS YE WHO ENTER HERE
>GENESIS
Not too expensive. Fairly reliable. A decent amount of the good games aren't expensive. You'd want to look for a model 1 (the rectangular one) that says "High Definition Graphics" on top, or a Model 3 (the compact one).
>SNES
Console cheap. Games expensive (if you're looking for 1st-party titles). The system of choice for old-school RPGs.
>Playstation (2)
It's been said many times, you really want a PS2 for this. Lots of good games, but a MASSIVE amount of poorly-aged early 3d and cheap shovelware.
>N64
Good, very reliable. The trick here is finding controllers that have never been used to play Mario Party (as the minigames are hell on the analog stick). If you look you can sometimes find people selling ones with the expansion pak already installed.
>Saturn
The small library of the N64, the early 3d of the Playstation, and the high price tag of the turbografx, all in one inconvenient package. If you want good games, prepare to buy a Action Replay and imports, or shell out major cash.
>Dreamcast
Not too expensive to get into right now, and lots of decent games. However, you're /vr/ threads will forever be cursed with trolls.

I live in the better Carolina and I generally have no problems finding retro. My problem is I usually don't have enough space or money to put all the stuff I find. I would say go to the flea markets in big cities and yard sales in small towns for the best finds.

I had a Sega Genesis and played all the sonic games as they came out (except for Chaotix). Looking back on it now, SA's storyline is pathetically weak, But the redesigned characters were nice, the gameplay was fun, when you weren't fishing (why did Big get 5 levels and Amy only got 3?), and I liked the exploration aspect, plus the only storyline we'd had up until that point was Robotnik is an asshole, Knuckles is a moron.

SA2 began the descent into shittiness. I actually liked the storyline more, but the gameplay suffered. No exploration, tails is stuck in the stupid walker thing, Amy Rose is relegated to npc status, and we got the first inclusion of rail-grinding. Seriously, IMO, rail grinding, and the homing attack in 2D games are the two worst things in modern sonic games.

Heroes continued the downward spiral, but was still kind of fun. The return of the chaotix, Amy, and the E-series was nice, but I really hated the team vs team battles and the whole game just felt like it was missing something. It just didn't feel memorable.

Sonic 2006: Now they're just fucking with us.
