I don't think a highly obscure Japan only game title is a great example of the majority of 2D games of the generation.
-Legend of Mana
-Ganbare Goemon: Uchū Kaizoku Akogingu
-Mega Man X4 (also on saturn, uh-oh!)
-Rayman
-Gunner's Heaven
-Brave Prove
-In the Hunt
-Punky Skunk
-Panzer Bandit
-Herc's Adventures
-saga frontier 2
That's just a few. They have very vibrant 2D graphics, but I'm sure someone with such a disgustingly close minded view on on the matter will feel attacked and offended they would be put on the spot with this post. There is also an obvious reason why these 2D games focus on bright characters on darker, flatter backgrounds that lose detail as they go deeper back.

Yeah I woulnd't be THAT optimistic, but still.

Still, if you're itching to try it, you could just use a guide to reach dungeons (dungeons are 2D, but non linear, and BIG. They require a bit of exploration and backtracking). Alternatively, you could try the first PS1 game (pic related, Uchuu Kaizoku Akogingu), which plays exactly like GG3, and no one is translating it.
