I like ambient, but I just don't like the way Aubrey Hodges does it, Trent Reznor's ambient music for Quake is leagues better, it has much more variety as well as some actual melodies.
For that matter I just think Doom's original mix of slow atmospheric tunes and fast rock tracks works great for the game, E2M6 has this ominous and evil sounding tension track which is just perfect for the shadowy wood panel maze, with all the monsters stalking you in the dark, some which could tear you apart in a few seconds if they corner you.
