One of the bigger arguments for DC to be included was that it was positioned between fifth and sixth gen, and there are reasons it might belong in either one.

But really if you want someone to blame for the mess, then blame gamespot or whatever gaming site it was back in the day that pushed the stupid generation convention. Separating consoles by date alone just doesn't make sense in a lot of cases and no-one has managed to come up with a better all-encompassing alternative.

For me personally, retro stops at the point where 3D polygons became the norm.

They're not even deleted consistently. Some of those threads were getting pruned while other similar threads were left up. The generations thing started small but caught on for some reason and is almost uncontested now despite making absolutely no sense for consoles that aren't released at the same time. Occasionally you'll come across people who swear the generation thing makes perfect sense, but when you press them they come up with all kinds of nonsense on the spot to try and justify it. You could start saying N64 is 6th gen and the only recourse you'd hear would be that it's 5th gen. Generations are just groups made up by some random guy on Gamestop years ago.

It would be much harder to misinterpret the rules if generations were taken out altogether, only sticking to the year thing. That probably wouldn't stop that janitor with the DC vendetta though.
