Doom 64 is not necessary to play if you're interested in playing wads, because it's its own thing that has features and aspects that didn't become replicable for PC players until UDMF and ZScript many years later, and most mappers don't use those features in order to make them compatible with non ZDoom source ports like PRBoom. It's a perfectly fine game and there are those who love it, though every time I tried it I got bored.
