I think that whole generation felt magical overall. Today, generations just feel like an extension of the previous one. It's kind of depressing. The future felt so bright for vidya games back then, but now it feels so bleak.

I know this is going to sound lame, but I feel like for PSOne games, I would rather just play it on a CRT on the original hardware or PS2. I also know not everyone has that luxury. I have a modded PS TV and for what it's worth, it's nice

I figure I would throw my hat (opinion) into this conversation. I bought the network adapter and a FFXI HDD somewhere around 2004 I believe. Honestly, I used it a lot and have very fond memories with the service and games. Off the top of my head, I played Final Fantasy XI, Resident Evil Outbreak and File 2, Metal Gear Solid 3 online (and downloaded camo online with the original game), Metal of Honor Rising Son, Killzone, XIII, Mortal Kombat Deception and a little bit of SOCOM. I think the HDD was extremely underused and that might have been the main reason Sony axed its capability with the slim PS2. It also think it might be a valid with possibility (though, I have nothing to back this up with) Sony might have had some serious security concerns. I honestly don’t know. I do think the online capabilities were pretty great for time, all things considered for a free service launched in 2000. Now the HDD was completely squandered on all levels. I honestly only used it for FFXI and RE Outbreak. That’s downright criminal. I ever heard a good chunk of hardcore SOCOM fans bought the HDD just for maps, if I remember correctly.

Anon, I make this same point every time I see it, and people still parroting the same talking points. They will forever claim, the only reason why the PS2 sold 155 million units was because of the DVD player alone. Even though, the Xbox had a DVD player (I don't care if it was a 20 dollar separate purchase for a DRM dongle and DVD remote. It wasn't required on later models anyway). People can't fathom it was a perfect storm of features. The PS2 really was the ultimate console for its time

I would have to heavily disagree. The PS1 and PS2 had a ton of quirky Japanese games. It was basically Sony's bread and butter at the time. Do you think anything like .hack//, Mister Mosquito or Ico could happen today? No. You could play the whole game in Japanese or English, Ico had it's own made up language and Tencuh could be played in Japanese or English. I am sure there are countless other games I can't think off the top of my head. I would even argue Sony really let peoples imagination run wild around this time. I just watched a documentary on Twisted Metal and Sony basically let them do whatever they wanted. Twisted Metal Black was bonkers edgy and they knew it would only sell well in America. I don't think you can compare golden age Sony, to what they have become today

I have never owned a PS2 Slim but I am thinking about picking one up. Is there any major differences between the two systems besides not being able to use the stock HDD?
