OP I feel you, I am usually good at picking up games, but this somehow is not possible for me. Even looked up a step by step yt vid, got it to work like once in 100 tries.
Really like the game, but it always stops around that time

Was play AOL last week and it is always so satisfying when you get the downthrust, especially since it doesn't really bounce but plunges.

Things I also like:
>digging sections to get to different areas or get items (smb2, smw Star road)
>secret exits
>game+ mode in some form to reward completion and make it more difficult
>ride-able units (eg yoshi, mega man robot, kirby animals)
>different characters to select for different experience/ progression (eg. Little Samson, tiny toons)
>a button combo that makes nothing but a novelty move/Sound (eg hero farts)
>still animation when not moving (sonic looking at watch, Mario starting to dream of lasagna)
>breakable walls and floor

Probably much more, this was just from the top of my head
