Oh wow, I haven't seen that screen before!
It seems like SMRPG went through a crazy tumultuous development. It seems a lot of the graphics changed drastically, which I'm not sure is totally normal. It's been known that Nintendo was unpleased by how the game went IIRC and eventually completely took over the project

Also one of the lead? artist of the project posted concept art, including an entire Smithy Gang map, which was significantly bigger. I wonder how much was scrapped in the shuffle, or how much was scrapped from the get go
