It was sparked due to disproportionate killing of black men by cops. The problem is that in like most cases of police murders the ability to deescalate is there, but it's up the the digression of the cops. Why do you think cops can pull you over for speeding but not give you a ticket? The issue is that laws are not being enforced fairly. And I'm not talking about judges giving someone 10 years over 5 kind of shit, I mean on the very first step you are more likely to be arrested for being black than you are white.
Don't interpret this as people wanting quotas for arrests, take this as a need for issues to not reach the point of arrest, or murder, or whatever. To maybe educated and teach people so that we can live in a society that is somewhat self governed.
The only times when people should get killed over legal matters is when SWAT gets involved and people are actively at risk, not on some petty no-knock raid by pigs too fat for their shirts who can't read an address correctly.

I agree the riots are kind of retarded because all the justifications for it are "muh pigs protect muh corporations" shit. They are kind of proving that cops are necessary to some degree with their actions, but at this point with the democrats and republicans basically not wanting to do anything but call each other faggots over the podium the only way to get shit done is to actively do shit.
It's a big stupid fucking mess that would've been solved if the left would've fucked off about their anti-gun shit. We didn't need cops until we had city slickers and women actively be the authority over us.
