try Super Mario Unlimited. I can't recommend it enough, probably my favorite mario hack, and it sounds like it'd be right up your alley. it's like SMB and SMB3 had a child, it's got some brilliant level design (your given unlimited lives) that gets really, really tricky without ever getting "cheap". the graphics are pretty incredible too for a nes rom
