GT64 Championship Edition, a.k.a. City Tour Grand Prix. This one has become a guilty pleasure of mine. It has bad framerate on the original hardware but none of the emulators are accurate about this so it runs at 30 fps when emulated. It plays quite well and the cars behave more or less realistically. I'd even say that it plays like a slightly simpler Gran Turismo 1, especially in stuff like drifting and skidding which feel really similar, rather than regular arcadey N64 racing stuff or something like Ridge Racer.
Now despite being released in the West and being infamously panned by critics, it stays being a relatively obscure title. I have tried to find some information about its development but couldn't find any. The game is a licensed JGTC title but Japanese version was released last, even though US and PAL versions were heavily localized to the point of adding a US track and moving another track from Fuji to unknown European location. So apparently an unfinished version was localized for the western releases. I also was surprised to know that this game developers, known as Media Design & Art, are not related to Genki team that made Multi-Racing Championship and Rally Challenge 2000 for N64 despite what some anons here say. Nor they are related to the developers of any other JGTC game, of which there were one on Super Famicom, three on PS1 and one on GBA. The only connection I could find is the 18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker for Sega Naomi and Dreamcast as some of the developers staff is shared between these games and has moved to Sega some time later. So, if anyone has anything about this game, please share. Japanese magazines scans with previews or interviews would be the best.
