I use an emulator for anything that runs well enough on one, even more so if it's portable because I like playing games on the go. I keep hardware around for things that still emulate badly, like most Saturn games.

Ohh it is, that's why I say it's a cute collector's item. Screen is kind of nice, and it's fun to see actual carts running on it. But if you try to actually use it portable it eats batteries like candy and there were a few times trying to play it on road trips that bumps in the road would jostle enough to fuck it up.

So like I say, I like and am glad I have it. Back when it was new and options were limited it was more exciting. But for practical purposes these days playing retro on the go I virtually always use a PSP or 3DS these days.

Being able to play the games I love anywhere I please? I think it's pretty damn great.

I also commute on my office days and that's some of my best gaming time. No other pressing distractions, I get a few good blocks of time with little else to do than play stuff. It's a longer commute than yours though.

On my "off" days I'm often too busy with other things that even games I'm really into will get shuffled to the bottom of the pile.

For console games I prefer emulation because I don't like CRTs and like playing on the go.

For portable systems I usually prefer the original, but am fine with emulating as well.

How do you think it sucks? So long as the emulator isn't laggy, I think it's just as good if not better. Partly I don't like CRT screens, so I'd rather see the games on another display. And also it's great to take games on the go with you as well.

Personally I don't see the point of them at all. If you're into original hardware then why would you want one? If you're not then emulating is better and cheaper in every way.

One of my friends has one (no joke, to appease his wife not wanting the house cluttered). His daughter apparently plays it sometimes, but he tried booting up Actraiser to show me it working and it ended up as 10 minutes of him messing around trying to get it to boot properly and then giving up in the end.

It's your money, do what you want with it. But I am utterly confounded that those things are successful at all.

I'm the big big Ecco lover around here who talks about it all the time and was one of the main people trolling that guy. But really only because it was funny as he got increasingly upset over a game he doesn't even like. And also that his reasons for thinking it was crap boiled down to he wanted it to be more of an action game and was too stoned to learn how to play. I don't actually care that he or anyone else doesn't like it. That's how a lot of my favorite games are, like Fez.

The guy who took the screenshot was a lot more invested I think. But it's 4chan, so who knows?

God yes! Considering what they did with the graphics on Genesis feels like borderline wizardry, I would have loved to see what Saturn could really do. But, these days if the rights ever do go back and we get a new game it will be able to look even better. I want to swim through some glorious HD Zdeněk Burian paintings and fight prehistoric aliens or some shit. Some day perhaps. Otherwise I need to learn to code before I die.

>but I did a set up where we can dual play two different video sources on the big LCD with a set of wireless headphones.
That does sound pretty damn sweet.

No kids for me, and the fairly limited time we have to spend together me and my wife either watch or play the same things at those times. Otherwise I'll just unplug the laptop and play like that while she uses the Xbox for Netflix or whatever.

I also love the PSP screen for games. The next best thing to being blown up huge is shrunk down nice and tight like this.

>>2802256
Chill it man, none of this is about butt blasting anyone. I don't really get why people who like CRTs prefer them, but I'm happy they like what they have. Less shitposting both ways makes this place better for all of us.

Does anyone else love the way 8 and 16 bit games look when shrunk down onto a tiny screen like this? Handheld is how I like to play all my games now, they just look so gorgeous like this. Am I alone on this?

A little bit of this sort of. For me PCs have always mostly been about work and I do my gaming on consoles.

I'm big into portables though and that's my most preferred way to play games. I also absolutely love how great old games look when shrunk down onto a smaller screen.

This. Both. I probably emulate more than physical these days, because I like playing portable. Each is different but fun.

Good try, but I picked that up in a pawnshop in Toronto in 2000 for $50. I got Darius Gaiden, Astal, Gungriffon and Clockwork Knight 2 at the same time. It was a good trip.

Back to the original point that started this all though. Back then emulation was still pretty shitty, but these days it's near perfect. I can hardly remember the last time I actually used my Nomad. The PSP emulates anything of that era except the SNES and some GBA stuff pretty well perfectly.

If people want to collect, that's cool. More power to you, but I really don't think it's worth getting worked up over it if you're just looking to experience the games themselves. Emulation is more than fine for that.

Also to your original point, I did get my first Genesis and SNES as gifts from my parents and I still have them, but I fail to see anything wrong with that.

I actually still have most of my old systems and games, I just keep them packed away. The only retro stuff I play physically these days are portables. You can actually see my Nomad in that picture and I still have gameboy and GBA SP(not retro!) that I play fairly regularly.

Mostly I moved to emulation out of convenience, I don't like having a lot of systems hooked up at once. Usually just one, which these days is a 360. For most retro stuff I just use a PSP.

These days it's probably 95% emulator. Sometimes I'll play a gameboy cart or pull out the Nomad or something like that. But it's getting rarer and rarer. The only old system I still have hooked up is a Saturn, other than that all my games and stuff are packed away in boxes.

For pretty much anything other than SNES games these days I just use a PSP which works surprisingly well. Even for SNES stuff sometimes, but individual games take individual fiddling I have found.
