The point is that they soullessly based a story element on a random character that was already part of one because they ran out of ideas on how to make a unique third version. At least they prepared in Gen 3 for this with Rayquaza. Not everything can or should be like Yellow, which was probably the only soulful and actually unique "third version".

Good post. A lot of those things I forgot about but amazed the fuck out of me as well, bro. Pleasant reminders. Remember all the rumors prior to this release? Obviously Pikablu, but I remember one website claiming there were going to be 3rd stage evolutions (permanent, not just megaevolution temporary junk) and that Ampharos was Persian's evolved form. I printed off the infopage featuring all this (as we did then) and showed it off to my fellow firstgraders. Same kind of thing happened a few months earlier with Pokemon The First Movie internet fan rumor pages (even though they only referred to it as "Mewtwo Strikes Back" then), speculating who all these characters in the movie were. I wish I could remember all these website names for the Wayback Machine. All I remember is (vaguely) "Jason's Pokemon Page" which had low-tech Pinsir-themed blackjack. Too good times.
