/vr/ - Retro Games

No bloody contest.

Anyone else feel like the Donkey Kong Country trilogy was the high point for platformers? They looked amazing, played well, and had incredible music. Donkey Kong 64 was a step back from the tight game design of Country, and no platformers save Mario 64 really engaged me like DKC did.

One of the first NES games I ever finished, amazing playing it back on the Virtual Console back in 2010 (family was poor as fuck when I was in 9th grade)
Grew up with pic related on the GBA and played the SNES version on the Wii when we finally got internet.

So which DKC game is the best? Pic related, I think 2 is objectively the best with it's excellent level design and music. I loved the pirate/ghost themes a lot more than the generic jungle theme of the first game, but the entire trilogy as a whole is brilliant.

This game is so mediocre, yet gets so much praise. The platforming and mechanics are incredibly generic, it just has nice graphics (for the time) and le epic collectathon "replay value." Why is this so praised?

How came that DKC2 sold more copies in Japan then other regions? I noticed that they liked the game a lot.

I was never a fan of this game. The level designs were pretty boring and it was just a typical 2D Platformer. You probably like this game, because you grew up with it.

Sonic and Mega Man are better platformers than this

One of my favorites from DKC2, but I feel like it gets overlooked a lot since everyone fawns over Stickerbrush Symphony.

So what are some other really good bits of /vr/ music that get overlooked, whether because the rest of the soundtrack is so good, or because the game wasn't very popular?
