I mean, we all have different tastes. There's people who don't like Mario/Nintendo games at all (probably due more to console warring reasons, but whatever). There's people who just don't like platformers at all.
Trying to come up with the "SMW isn't as good" meme is almost as bad as the "Sonic was never good" meme.

Definitely the climax of the movie was underwhelming, a battle between giant ultraman Mario and giant kaiju King Koopa would have been kino, but otherwise I adore the movie, as clusterfuck as the development was.

SMB movie is "too bad, too good" too, Hoskins and Hopper alone "give the life for the movie" as you say, plus there's a certain charm in seeing a dystopian cyberpunk Mushroom Kingdom.

This game, even for a fucking glorified chat room, it was alot of fun just bullshitting or heading to Yashma's Gym dream for the RPG scripts running in it. Met a friend on there who didn't happen to live too far away, introduced me to my fiance some years later. Man, there's no way in hell we viewed this thing as a furry kink game back in the late 90's, nobody really knew about that shit, it was just a dumb fantasy thing. Everything feels like it got rotten on the internet somewhere down the line.

You know, the sad thing about these games for me is how much I truly.. don't like them.

Don't get me wrong, I really want to like this series. I love the concept, the art style, and even the presentation of the battles and the world. So, when I say I don't like them, I guess you can say that from a narrative stand point. I've always found the ones I've played to be very stale and take a little too long to get anywhere, I think the longest I've stick with one was 3 and that is because I really wanted to hit the "adult" stage, but just couldn't stand rolling around with young Nina anymore. The other issue I have is the gameplay. Given how truly easy all the basic encounters are, they move at such a mind numbing pace because they are fully animated. These games also work on random encounters instead of EOF, so to me, moving across even a screen feels like a chore given the enemies and how the battle system is laid out.

That's sadly my opinion on it.
I think I want to try 4 again someday, but with the current climate of games, it has to wait.
