Honestly? A crapshoot for much of it. The very early CGA/EGA days were a bit of a shitshow where you got a lot of inferior ports from other platforms. There were some good ports and exclusive games, to be sure, especially once you got into the VGA era, but then you had the problem of whether your machine was capable of running games properly. If your rig was shit, you'd struggle to run much of anything but the simplest shit, provided you even had enough memory to run them in the first place, which was a whole other set of bullshit you might've had to deal with it. Conversely, if your rig was TOO good, some games might run way too fast to be playable or you'd run into other unexpected issues. And then there was the sound problem. There were a lot of sound cards, and some games were only compatible with some but not others. Granted, this got better once SoundBlaster compatibility became widespread, but even then there were some that were only just compatible enough to play sound, but did a shit job at it. Then there was the resource management, like >>10240454 says, where you had to make sure your IRQ and DMA values didn't conflict with other peripherals in your system. And then came the 3D accelerator cards, which was yet another clusterfuck of competing standards and APIs, where you once again had to see if the games you wanted to play were compatible with your accelerator. This, once again, got better once 3DFX and Glide came around, and even better once DirectX pretty much took over as THE standard, although even here, you still had to deal with shit drivers and such.

So yeah, shit sucked, but I still loved every bit of it.

Yeah, the last few Zerg missions are easily the hardest in the game, especially the one where you have to kill the Overmind and have to face combined Zerg and Terran forces IIRC. I always get filtered by that one. I'm currently playing through the campaign again, and I'm almost to that mission. Honestly dreading it.

Starcraft: Broodwar, although it's in the form of remastered. But it's the exact same game except for the graphical update. That's still alive and kicking, and also it's the greatest game of all time.

I played CS with 32 mb RAM or something in 1999, I specifically remember having to upgrade from 16 mb because my Voodoo 2 wouldn't work with CS otherwise.
