This is one of my favorite Famicom / NES games. It's called Hebereke and it's from Sunsoft. I know a lot of people praise Gimmick and I do love Gimmick also but I really like Hebereke too.

In this game you can explore around and after you gather different party members and abilities you gain access to new areas similar to Metroid. Each character plays a little differently and the world is really big so there's a lot of exploring to do. Every area has its own distinct feel so you don't have to worry about getting lost. There's also a map which makes it easier.

Admittedly when I first played I got lost at first. I have a boxed copy but I'm missing the manual so I didn't know how the map worked exactly but after exploring for a bit and gathering more items it all made sense. Great game overall and I don't have any real complaints about it.

This one got a European release but it's trash and they changed shit. Play the Japanese version.
