Indifferent. Played it in my early teens before beating X and with it being my first exposure to the whacky side of Japanese type humor in video games, thought the shift in tone was jarring as well as the writing, with the goofy moments either coming off nonsensical or awkward. Take something like going from playing Wild Arms 3 or Grandia 2 to God Hand, that's how jarring it was for me.
The combat didn't really click for me until around endgame where you get the Dark Knight job class and changing jobs during combat just zapped all the fun out of the experience and no, the option to shorten the transitions doesn't make it make better.
