why the FUCK don't other RPGs do this?

I really wish more people appreciated Lufia 2. If it weren't for the fucked up glitches in the US version I'm certain we'd be getting semi-frequent re-releases of it, and it may even be held on the same pedestal as games like EarthBound, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy VI, although that may be a bit of a stretch.

Do I miss something essential if I don't play the first one and start with this?

Well, I decided to play Lufia II instead of Paladin's Quest. Don't get me wrong, I actually played it a long time ago (I even own it), I just never beat it.
Puzzles are the best I've ever seen on a JRPG, but the rest is a bit basic. Graphics are almost excellent, but the animations are a bit lacking. Music is decent but lacks variety.
I know there's a lot of people that swear by it, and hey, I swear by Terranigma, but so far it's just a very good game.
How are the other games in the series, anyway?

At the beginning of the game it seems that your romantic interest is the boring girl next door archetype Tia but as the game progresses you are soon presented your real love interest Selan. Unlike most forced JRPG love interests isn't some bland annoying teenager that always needs you to do everything for her, she is a fucking commander of an army who eventually falls for Maxim due to his leadership capabilities and him risking own his for life for her. Now about half-way through the game Lufia 2 does something we very rarely see in video games, after Maxim nearly loses his life when fighting one the game's main villains he and Selan GET MARRIED and HAVE A CHILD. At later parts of the game they fight to protect their child and in fact they die at the end protecting their child.

This game avoids most of the shortcomings in video game romances and should get credit for it. That said it's ridiculous that the bad guys in the game stop trying to destroy the world for a year so Maxim and Selan can get married and have that child...

I don't think there's a more heart wrenching /vr/ game than Lufia 2. Hell, I don't think there's a more heart wrenching game period. What say you, /vr/?
