Kinda both - translucent things tend to get darker at different depths, you can see how it gradients from the most saturated color, on top where the sunlight hits it, then dulls down in both saturation and value before ramping back up at the bottom to show the paldrons flaring out. That combined with the circular painting technique emulates the scratches on brushed or worn metal, capped off with minimal stark white highlights. The red on on the top right is a solid example.
