One thing I love about DotR specifically is how I didn't really go for this objectivelly ideal deck in the campaign, and repeated playthroughs, like in most Yu-Gi-Oh! video games, in FM we all know it was all about THTD and then MBD with all of the generic equips, then in the GBA titles it was that time frame's meta in the OCG/TCG with a bunch of generic powerful cards with good synergy...

In DotR, my 1st deck was a Forest/Insect deck as Weevil gave me a bunch of decent cards early on, so I just kept playing against him and building it up as it had synergy with my starting deck too.

On my 2nd playthrough, with the Yorkists, I went for a different approach, a Wind Dragon/Harpie deck, with Thousand Dragon as my trump card, it was so fun! I loved building different decks here.

I'm leaving here the option to vote for THE FUCKING DUELIST OF THE FUCKING ROSES ON THE FUCKING PS2 just in case anyone else likes it enough to want it on the list just like me.

Duelist of the Roses is a huge jump in quality if compared to Forbidden Memories, and I grew up with the latter, so this isn't nostalgia talking, in FM you essentially have an ideal deck and it's a matter of bigger numbers winning, not a whole lot of depth, also lots of grinding. In DotR, in my repeated playthroughs I actually used different decks and strategies, and it was a blast to play.

It also takes more strategy in general to play, its field being the way that it is has so much depth and potential, I wish they had made more titles with this formula as it's both unique and fun too.

I'm still more of a FM fan due to nostalgia and it having a better atmosphere in my eyes, but both are excellent and fun even today, with DotR for me being a better CCG video game overall now.

As a kid, one of my favorite anime to watch was Yu-Gi-Oh! and that eventually led to me going after cards for myself, though my parents found them expensive at the time so all I had was a lot of counterfeit cards, which I'm still grateful for, anyways my main method of actually playing ended up being through video games, most specificall Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories (PS1) and I loved it, I know it doesn't have the best reputation, and I do feel most criticism of it is quite fair, but I still find it to be average once you grow familiar with how it works. Anyways, there was a sequel, which I never played, until now.

So far there's a lot of things that bother me, mostly things that are problems in every single Yu-Gi-Oh! video game from the time, just a case of Konami being Konami. Well then, some cards can only be acquired through the slot machine, some only through reincarnation, which is a random mechanic where you just have to get lucky, and some are only acquired by getting a full line of the same card at the slot machine, and even then some are random... if you've ever played a card game, you know a consistent deck with a lot of playsets are key, and it's so tough to do that here, collecting in general is tough...

Still, I have to say, this has been quite the experience so far, I mean, it's the sequel to one of my favorite video games, and a lot of the gameplay mechanics are similar... but the fundamentals, especially the board, are a huge departure. I feel that I wouldn't have appreciated this as a kid, so it's a good thing I'm only playing it now, the emphasis on different fields and moving cards around reminds me of Duelist Kingdom, which is nice, I love the focus on building a deck by attributes and types, with fields/equips, it's the direction the OCG/TCG should've gone in, I wish this concept could have another shot.

P.S. One more reason I'm fond of grinding against Isis/Ishizu for a B/C/D POW/TEC is that not only does she give out Dragon Treasure in these ranks, she also gives out Widespread Ruin, which is easily the best Trap in the entire card pool and something I recommend running a playset of aswell. Someone else you can grind against, when you learn how to effectively pull of S/A TECs is Shadi, if you want a playset of Raigeki. I'd say this covers everything, the last thing to really mention is that Forbidden Memories takes a while to finish, you'll be grinding for quite some time to get everything you need so it's important to have that in mind and be patient, of course you can try to progress without getting all of the cards I've mentioned, and I've already managed to complete it with a less powerful deck, but it's less reliable and that can be especially difficult in the Final Six, since you have to beat them all in a row without any saving in between, but it's doable and quite rewarding when you finally pull it off, the most difficult one is definitely Seto 3rd because of Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon, but all of them can be troublesome.

I miss those days, Konami would make these videogames often, and they experimented so much aswell, nowadays all we get are recreations of the card game, perhaps with an anime campaign, I don't think it's bad, but I miss those unique RPGs. Here's hoping that Master Duel can bring some of that back, though I don't put much faith in that.

I love how these retro YGO videogames could make us grow fond of cards that weren't released in the TCG, but also fall in love with cards that were in the TCG, but didn't see much play in real life. I never saw anyone in real life play Skelengel, Doron or Hourglass of Life, but to me those are staples in DDS and TSC, I associate them with YGO a lot now.

Well, if you're avoiding Pot of Greed, then avoiding Graceful Charity aswell makes sense, afterall they're both incredibly powerful and downright broken drawing spells, avoiding one while playing the other would be like Konami unbanning one of them in the OCG/TCG while the other stays banned, I'd say avoid both, or use both if the CPU becomes a chating bastard later on.
